Imagine if your favorite Marvel characters were wine? Which wine would they be? What characteristics would they portray? What flavor profiles would they have? Would they be bold? Soft? Tannic? Acidic?
Captain America
Arguably the most popular of all Marvel Superheroes, Captain America’s like the bold, tannic, and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon—the most popular wine variety in the world. Big, bold, and tannic allows it to age well in the bottle. Cap’s been around forever, so clearly he ages well, and he’s got a bit of a long peppery finish.
Iron Man
Iron Man kind of reminds me of many Viogniers made in the United States. While Tony Stark is quite the lady’s man and a jokester (spicy and forward) his effect is only one-dimensional and not as complex as you would have expected or hoped for. He’s a tasty endeavor, but may leave you feeling unsatisfied or wanting more.
Black Widow
Bold like Sangiovese, Black Widow is anything but subtle. If she were a wine, Black Widow would be a medium- to full-bodied, bold fruit and spice Sangiovese—the backbone of many Italian wines and the Avengers—with a supple texture, she rounds out the texture and lightens the tannins on the team for a smooth finish.
Thor
Riesling might be the wine best relatable to Thor. This off-dray aromatic white wine is mouth-watering and often tart with lemon, pear, apricot, and honey sweetness. That sounds like our handsome Asgardian—mouthwatering and sweet. He vanishes so quickly when he uses the portal to Asgard, he’s almost clear in color like his Riesling counterpart.
Hawkeye
Bursting with a fruit and lightness, Pinot Noir reminds of Hawkeye’s agility and spirit. Slightly tart, this light-bodied red offers a long soft finish, much like the way Hawkeye shoots. It can be chameleon-like, too, in that sometimes it’s hard to evaluate from the barrel, showing excellently one day and poorly another. Hawkeye is a bit of a chameleon himself.
Ant-Man
Merlot is medium-bodied, with an uncomplicated fruitiness reminiscent of plums or cherries, sometimes described as “jammy.” It’s a versatile wine and can be done in several styles, ranging from soft to more tannic, but can be a fussy grape to grow. That fussiness is what reminds me of Ant-Man, when he was learning to shrink and grow and control his abilities as a Superhero. He’s versatile in both his full and shrunken forms, and in between.
