Last week I had a chance to screen Disneynature’s MONKEY KINGDOM and then visit the Los Angeles Zoo. The Zoo is always a fun time, and I sure do love seeing the monkeys. I always have. Cathy Walker is the Manager of Private and Special Events for the LA Zoo and she did a great job with our special private tour.We got a behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo and some special guided information about some of the animals, including information about some monkeys similar to Maya and the monkeys featured in Monkey Kingdom, in theatres this Friday, April 17th.
Considering we were there mid-day on on Friday, I can’t believe how packed the zoo was! Clearly the zoo is an educational hotspot for local school groups.
Here I am hanging out at the LA Zoo with my friend and Portland blogger, Sara, of BudgetSavvyDiva.com

Asian Elephant
The LA Zoo is home to Asian Elephants. The elephant is the world’s largest living land mammal. Asian elephants are listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Elephants have been hunted illegally for their tusks (ivory), and much of their habitat has been destroyed.
Chimpanzees
The Los Angeles Zoo is home to one of the largest chimpanzee troops of any zoo in the country. This was one of the most fun exhibits, watching the young chimpanzees play and then watching them eat at feeding time.
Siamang Gibbons
Siamang Gibbons are diurnal. They are active in the mornings and evenings, but they tend to rest in the middle of the day in addition to sleeping at night. They also are known for their call! Listen to the Siamang call in this video I took at the zoo!
Black Howler Monkeys
Black Howler Monkeys are the loudest monkeys in the world. Even though they are all called “Black Howler Monkeys,” only the males are black. The adult females and juveniles are tan.
North American River Otters
North American River Otters are energetic, semi-aquatic mammals. Due to a high rate of metabolism, otters are super energetic and love to play. They live in dens built along banked shores. River Otters happen to be my oldest daughter’s favorite animal at the zoo, so I made sure to snap a shot just for her.
Kangaroos
Ahhh…the kangaroos and joeys. So cute! I’m not sure what’s happening in those last two shots. One was trying to get some air. I think they were practicing their Avengers moves.

Jana, You took some fantastic shots. I love the one of the joeys muscling around with each other. Great capture.
Thanks, Drew! Those joeys cracked me up!
Our kids love going to the zoo. We have never been to Los Angeles” zoo, but we go to the Omaha zoo every summer.
What a super fun day! Love some of the animal shots you captured!
You did get some great pictures! I just love visiting all the animals at the zoo! It was a great day.
