THE IDEA OF YOU is a Fun Adult Rom-Com

THE IDEA OF YOU is a fun adult rom-com—adult being the keyword—with its spicy, juicy moments.

Adult rom-com lovers and boy-band boppers will love THE IDEA OF YOU, a film based on Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel of the same name, about a May-December romance a la Stella Got Her Groove Back vibes.

the idea of you

Los Angeles art gallery owner Solène Marchand meets August Moon boy band star Hayes Campbell at a Coachella meet-and-greet with her daughter. Turns out Hayes has a thing for beautiful slightly older women. And why shouldn’t he?

A series of trysts turn into something more but presents challenges as Solène rediscovers herself after divorce and the couple have disparate worlds.

the idea of you

Hayes and Solène have an off-the-charts chemistry, but by necessity, Solène and Hayes spend much of their relationship in private. That chemistry quickly leads to partaking in steamy private activities, thus the spicy, juicy moments. Can we please have more of Hathaway in roles like this?

While the pair have a 16-year-age gap, the real challenge for the couple is more the romance under intense media scrutiny than the age-gap romance itself. THE IDEA OF YOU highlights the ramifications of love in the age of social media and what happens when it impacts others besides the two of you at such a high level.

Verdict

Book-to-film adaptations are never perfect, but The Idea of You is a fun watch that shows the societal issues with age-gap romances and is a great evening in, especially if you love a rom com with juicy moments.

About THE IDEA OF YOU

Based on the acclaimed, contemporary love story of the same name, The Idea of You centers on Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet. When Solène must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex bails at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with Hayes and there is an instant, undeniable spark. As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for.
