Did you know that February 8th is National Girl Scout Cookie Day? I’m celebrating by pairing some of my favorite Girl Scout cookies with some of my favorite wines! If you’re looking for a unique dessert pairing, try one of my suggestions below. We felt with all the new varieties of Girl Scout Cookies in the last few years, we needed to update our February 2014 post and add the new Girl Scout Cookies and Wine Pairings for 2019. Girl Scout Cookies and Wine Pairing

Quick Pairing Tip

If your dessert has chocolate or berries, consider pairing with a red wine. If your dessert has vanilla or lemon, think white wine. In general, the wine you choose should be at least as sweet as the dessert you are pairing it with. You can always go with my favorite affordable champagne or sparkling white wine option for pairing with dessert if you want a no brainer and don’t want to think any further: NV Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label. You could also try a less expensive sparkling white wine such as NV Gruet Domaine St. Vincent Brut, Methode Champenoise Sparkling Wine.

tawny port and samoas

Samoas and Port

Try a red dessert wine or port with these caramel, coconut, and chocolate treats. This Graham’s 10-Year Tawny Port pairs very nicely. Delightful! A Tawny Port is always a great choice with its complex nutty aromas, combined with hints of honey and figs and deep, rich fruit flavors.

cabernet sauvignon and thin mints

Thin Mints and Cabernet Sauvignon

Mint seems like a hard flavor to pair with wine. But it’s actually not. Try pairing this mint chocolate-covered wafer with a Cabernet Sauvignon like the 2015 Rodney Strong Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is lush with blackberries, dark plum, and chocolate meshed with notes of dried herbs, black pepper, and minerality—which stand up to the mint of the Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie. You could also consider pairing this with a Syrah, also a bold red.

zinfandel and tagalongs

Tagalongs and Zinfandel

Try a fruity red wine such as Beaujolais or Zinfandel to pair with this chocolate and peanut butter patty. I like Louis Jadot Beaujolais for its juicy medium-bodied wine with strawberry and black cherry notes. For a Zinfandel, I LOVE the 2016 Pedroncelli Zinfandel. This wine features spicy aromas of ripe berries with hints of black pepper, cinnamon, and toasty oak. Bold flavors of blackberry, plum, a touch of vanilla and rich cocoa are at the core of this rich, full-bodied Zinfandel, making this wine one that can hold up to the rich flavors of the Tagalong.

trefoils and chardonnay pinor noir

Trefoils and Chardonnay // Trefoils and Pinot Noir

trefoils and pinot noir

This shortbread cookie can pair easily with so many wine options. If you want red, try a Pinot Noir. I recommend the deep, dark red fruits of the 2016 Franny Beck La Chenaie Vineyard Pinot Noir.

trefoils and chardonnay

You could also pair it with a nice Chardonnay. My favorite: 2017 Clos Pegase Estate Chardonnay. Aromas of peach, melon, cut straw, and bakers spice in the glass combined with flavors of stone fruit, cantaloupe, and pears with subtle notes of brioche and toasted coconut bring out the hints of vanilla in the shortbread.

savannah smiles pinot grigio chardonnay

Savannah Smiles and Chardonnay // Savannah Smiles and Pinot Grigio

These lemon-based shortbread cookies covered with powdered sugar will pair nicely with a Chardonnay or citrusy Pinot Grigio, or even Pinot Gris. My personal favorite: 2017 Serafina Pinot Grigio. Its peach and pear notes really highlight the lemon in the Savannah Smiles.

You could also pair it with a nice Chardonnay. As I mentioned above, the 2017 Clos Pegase Estate Chardonnay. Aromas of peach, melon, cut straw, and bakers spice in the glass combined with flavors of stone fruit, cantaloupe, and pears with subtle notes of brioche and toasted coconut bring out the hints of vanilla in the shortbread.

sparking wine and do-si-dos

Do-Si-Dos and Sparkling Wine

I always wonder what pairs well with peanut butter. It doesn’t seem like a naturally easy pairing. These peanut butter and oatmeal sandwich cookies pair well with a sparkling white, Champagne, or Moscato.

Our go-to sparkling white wine from a local producer is the 2010 Argyle Vintage Brut, a Pinot Noir-dominated blend with white peach, wild honey, and toasted brioche notes. You can grab whichever vintage you can find (2015 is available online).

Middle Sister Sweet and Sassy Moscato is an easy “quick go-to, I can grab anywhere I am” moscato if you prefer a sweeter pairing.

port and s'mores

S’mores and Tawny Port

The s’mores cookie was a tasty one to pair. We went back to the Graham’s 10-Year Tawny Port to pair with the crunchy graham sandwich cookies with creamy chocolate and marshmallowy filling. The complex nutty aromas, combined with hints of honey and figs mixed with notes of mature, rich fruit flavors are a perfect pairing.

loupiac toffee tastic sparkling wine

Toffee Tastic and Loupiac // Toffee Tastic and Sparkling Wine

toffee tastic and loupiac

These rich, buttery cookies with sweet, crunchy toffee bits pair easily with several varietals. You can choose a sparkling wine or dessert wine. I enjoy pairing this cookie with a Loupiac (a “Golden Bordeaux” dessert wine). I adore the flavors of the 2011 Château Dauphiné Rondillon Loupiac. This soft, fruity wine offers honey and apricot aromas with a palate of yellow fruits and a hint of bitter orange and botrytis mixed with a touch of a dry, spicy edge.

I also suggest a go-to like a sparkling white wine. I’m currently crushing on the 2010 Argyle Vintage Brut, a Pinot Noir-dominated blend with white peach, wild honey, and toasted brioche notes.

You could also try a Dolcetto, a sweet red wine served slightly chilled with black cherry flavors, which will pair nicely with this or many of the other cookies above.

What a wonderfully unique pairings post! I was a Girl Scout leader for 19 years, and still have one daughter in. My favorite cookies are Do-Si-Dos. The rest of the family hordes the Samoas, so I get as many as I want!

This is too funny! I never actually thought about Girl Scout cookies being something to pair with wine! (I guess it goes to show that anything can go with the right wine.)

I’m not much of a wine drinker but I have to admit that wine & Girl Scout cookies sound like the perfect ending to a rough day. These pairings sound very well put together. Thank you for sharing!

I have never paired Girl Scout cookies with wine. The cookies usually go very quickly in our house especially Thin Mints.

Now I’ve seen it all! All those nice little Girl Scouts selling their cookies so that we adults can have cocktail hour! Liking this concept. My real question is, did you test each of those pairings out before you decided? 🙂

I did test them (based on what I thought would work knowing what I do about pairing). I love a good wine pairing session.

I have to admit, I’m feeling a little melancholy this cookie season: it’s our last with an active Girl Scout in the house, after 27 years straight. I’m even buying a case of “Thanks-a-Lots” so I can gift a box to each of my co-leaders from my all years of being a troop leader. (Those are coming from Kansas, because Oregon doesn’t have them this year!) Anyway, it’s the end of an era, so clearly I need some wine. 😉 P.S. Do-Si-Do S’mores. You’re welcome.
