A Visit to Anaheim, CA, for National Travel and Tourism Week 2014
Who doesn’t love a little relief from the gray and rain? When you live in Oregon, you get a lot of that in the winter. I was so excited when I learned I was a winner in the Allegiant Air Blogger Contest this spring. The package included 3 nights in Anaheim for me and one person. So to kick off National Travel and Tourism Week (May 3–11, 2014), I took my son (our oldest child). Read about Day 1 of our adventure here.
Day 2: Saturday, May 4
Here’s a summary of Day 2 of our trip. My little man got sick late Friday night, so Saturday was a rest (and Urgent Care visit day) for us. A little rest, fluids, and antibiotics turned things around for our 3rd day. We missed Catalina Island, but it will be there for the next time.
Day 3: Sunday, May 5
Thank goodness for Urgent Care and meds. The little man was feeling better, so we hopped on the Anaheim Resort Transit bus and headed to Buena Park to spend the day at Knott’s Berry Farm Amusement Park. This 160-acre park is the oldest amusement park in the U.S. We rode roller coasters and thrill rides all day long, and had a few snack like funnel cake with boysenberries…yum!

We started our park rides at the Xcelerator, where we went 0 to 82 mph in 2.3 seconds. Wow. That was a start to the day! The little man’s favorite of the day was GhostRider—13 drops over 4,533 feet of twists, turns, and old-fashioned wooden tracks. My favorite of the day was the Silver Bullet. The SIlver Bullet is a suspended roller coaster with an initial drop of 109 feet. We were upside down six times. So much fun!

After a long day at Knott’s Berry Farm (we got there just before opening), we then walked north on Beach Boulevard to the Pirate’s Dinner Adventure for an evening of pirate fun. Arrive about an hour before the showtime to enjoy appetizers while awaiting the show to start. Get ready for a pirate attack just a few moments after the show starts. You’ll be held captive by pirates who will escort you in groups to the 18th century replica Spanish galleon. The show starts, dinner is served, and you set sail on a pirate adventure.
The food and drinks are good, and the audience engagement is even better. My son was captivated for the full show and even participated (somewhat uncommon for my surly pre-teen boy). Note of caution: the show was fantastic, but there is violence, sexuality, and inappropriate language throughout the show. Most of this will go over the heads of the wee ones, but your older children may get more education than you bargained for.
