Looking for a new movie to see this in theatres this weekend? A Royal Night Out is an historical fiction work based one perfect, glorious evening in the lives of two real life princesses. On V.E. Day in 1945, as peace extends across Europe, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret are allowed out to join the celebrations, after much deliberations and an initial no from their mother, I might add. It is a night full of excitement, danger, and the first flutters of romance.
On the night of May 8, 1945 (V.E. Day), all of London is in the streets celebrating the official end of World War II in Europe. Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Windsor, ages 19 and 14, have slipped out of the palace to join the celebration and go dancing at the Ritz. They apparently returned to Buckingham Palace just after midnight—or so the story goes. This warmhearted story of ‘what-if’ tells the adventures Elizabeth and Margaret might have had on that joyous night that brought the whole of London together.
The music, scenery, and costuming all do a fabulous job at making you feel like you are hanging out in 1945 London. We spend the evening with the young girls as they experience their first evening out in the city of London (semi) escorted by guards to celebrate with the rest of the citizens. Shenanigans and good times are had, a romance is begun. It’s a fun film rated PG-13, but really anyone in about 5th or 6th grade or up could watch the film and enjoy it. Save a couple of adult context scenes, it’s perfectly suited for just about any age.
The film stars Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Jack Reynor, Rupert Everett, and Emily Watson. A Royal Night Out is directed by acclaimed UK director Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane, Brideshead Revisited). To purchase tickets to A Royal Night Out.
