“From Cradle to Stage” Series Review
The original 6-episode series directed by Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl is inspired by his mother, Virginia Hanlon Grohl, and her book, “From Cradle to Stage: Stories from the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars.”
Throughout the series, you’ll learn about Dave as a child and the early days of his music career, from him and Virginia, as well as meet 6 other musicians and their moms.

“From Cradle to Stage” – Music in the Home is Influential
Growing up, music was always a huge part of my life. I was about 4 years old the first time my parents realized I could sing; not just sing a song as in, “Oh, she can carry a tune when she’s singing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’,” but sing, as in, “Whoa, how did she just repeat the lyrics and harmony from The Manhattan Transfer’s ‘Operator’?”
So when Dave Grohl and his mother Virginia Hanlon Grohl discussed Dave’s ability to recreate those same harmonies from songs by The Manhattan Transfer in the first episode of “From Cradle to Stage,” I was hooked. I felt both seen and personally attacked. I had no idea anyone else listened to artists like The Manhattan Transfer and Carly Simon on the regular for family road trips and harmonized with them the way we did.

Musical influence in the home, especially from a young age, is influential and shapes you as you grow, but is reflective in who you become as a person. Your experiences and recollection of those experiences, the way you feel those experiences, are formed by music.
Watching this series, it’s very much reinforced through each of these musician-mother pairs as they talk about their formative years just how much music in the home influenced them early on. You’ll enjoy hearing from Dan and Christene Reynolds, Pharrell and Carolyn Williams, Miranda and Bev Lambert, Brandi and Teresa Carlile, Tom and Mary Morello, and Geddy Lee and Mary Weinrib. I can’t wait to hear your favorite moments!
