“Renegade Nell” is a fantastical blend of action, comedy, and drama with a strong familial bond in an 18th-century setting. Louisa Harland of “Derry Girls” fame is witty, hilarious, charming, and badass as Nell.

Quick-witted and courageous Nellie “Nell” Jackson is framed for murder and finds herself on the lamb as she becomes the most wanted outlaw in 18th-century England. Nell realizes she is destined for bigger things than she could have ever imagined when her magical sprite-like sidekick, Billy Blind, appears to guide her in “Renegade Nell.”
If you love Netflix’s “Bridgerton” and dramas of that era, you’ll love the costuming in Disney’s “Renegade Nell.” Practical sets set in the period, supernatural flair, and great action scenes keep you wanting more of Harland as the snarky, charismatic Nell Jackson. “Renegade Nell” has something for everyone in this “Sleepy Hollow”-vibed justice-seeking highwayman story.
Harland uses her wit and supernatural abilities to dodge bullets and push them aside with her bare hands in this 6-part mini-series as she seeks justice in the battle of the haves vs. the have-nots (Robin Hood, anyone?).
Verdict
“Renegade Nell” is a family-friendly hoot, loaded with action. We love the feminist vibe as the highwayman story is given a twist with a female protagonist.
