If you decide to go camping, there are generally three kinds of places where you can camp: private land, state land, and Federal land. While camping on private land can be a good time, it ís generally pretty hard to come by, and certainly camping on Federal land in a park can be a great also, but the advantages of camping in a state park usually make it the best choice.
Advantages of Camping in a State Park
One of the main advantages of camping in a state park is all the support you get. State campgrounds generally have a lot of information on the web, as well as in the park itself with ranger stations and information centers. The kinds of information available are also generally more helpful due to the fact that there is often more staff on site than you wíll find in Federal parks. Also, state camping areas usually have less strict rules about what you can do while camping, such as building fires, and alcohol consumption.
Also, because the aim of most state parks is to support those that visit, as opposed to land preservation, the experience is generally more pleasant overall due to the feeling of being freer to experience the campground as a whole.
As an example, when camping in Federal forests, there is a tendency to try to keep campers gathered into certain areas, so as to keep them out of others. On state land, there is generally the opposite approach, land managers see the benefit in spreading people out so that the damage to the land is minimized. Also, when camping on Federal land there is a quite often the feeling of being watched by the Federal park police, as many of them are there to deter you from committing crimes or to catch you if you do something wrong. On state land, the primary job of the park employees is to make the land available for people to visit and to help them have a good time (yet safe time) while visiting as is possible.
Also, in most states, there is more state land available for camping, including both campgrounds and wilderness areas, and the campgrounds for state parks are almost always much nicer than are those in federal parks.
Finally, camping in a state park has the feeling of camping on a part of your own land, rather than as a visitor, which is definitely not the case with Federal or even private land for that matter; unless of course, you happen to be the owner.
