Dear Evan Hansen Tour- You will be found

If you’re a regular reader of the blog, it’s no secret that I’m a fan of musicals. As a parent, I’ve worked hard to ensure that my kids have exposure to the arts. One of the ways I’ve encouraged this is by sharing my love of musical theatre with them. At least two of my girls have grown to really love the theatre as much as I do, and one other loves dancing so my job here is done.

But once you share that love, sometimes you create a monster and then need to feed the beast. In this case, your kids beg to see shows when they come to town. A couple of years back the girls were obsessed with Hamilton. They’ve since shifted their obsession to Dear Evan Hansen, and rightfully so.

Dear Evan Hansen – Tour Review

Dear Evan Hansen, which has become an instant hit with teens and theatre-goers everywhere, tells the story of a teen with social anxiety disorder who longs to make connections with his peers and fit in.

When a boy in his class commits suicide, Evan finds himself at the center of the tragedy after he pretends to be good friends with the deceased in a misguided attempt to comfort the boy’s grieving family. Evan even goes as far as to invent a fake email account to validate their friendship. When a fake suicide note makes its way online, Evan finds himself the center of a viral video about friendship and loneliness, further perpetuating the lie.

As his social “currency” grows, Evan is forced to make a decision: Will he give into the fantasy he’s created, or will he risk losing everything he’s ever wanted?

I was invited to attend a media preview of Dear Evan Hansen at Portland’s Keller Auditorium. Unfortunately, I was scheduled to be out of town to speak at a conference, so my husband agreed to take my daughter to review the show for the site and placate her Dear Evan Hansen obsession. Of course, the evening of the show arrives, and my husband gets pulled into an urgent work call, so my daughter grabbed a friend and went to the theatre while dad took a call at the nearby coffee shop during the show. Thank goodness for independent teenagers.

My daughter really loved the touring cast of Dear Evan Hansen. She thought they cast the show well and she particularly liked the boy who played Evan (Stephen Christopher Anthony); he did a really good job with the role.

“My favorite part was probably during ‘Waving Through a Window’ when all of the cast was walking around him in different directions while he sang about how no one noticed him,” she said.

She also really liked the scene when he is talking to himself/Conor and he is basically asking himself if he really fell out of the tree if he was in denial of what really happened.

Dear Evan Hansen features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy, Tony, and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by 4-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).

Tickets are available through February 8th.
