SECRET INVASION Easter Eggs Episode 2: Promises

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Marvel’s Secret Invasion Episode 2.

1995

This week’s episode opened in 1995, with a scene of Nick Fury in the wake of the events of Captain Marvel.

In the movie, Fury recruits a group of Skrulls to help him monitor activities on Earth in exchange for giving them a new home after theirs was destroyed by the Kree.

We see Gravik, the present-day rebel Skrull leader, in this scene as a boy.

Moscow Power Play

After Gravik’s attack on Moscow, Fury and Hill are getting blamed for the casualties while Gravik pulls a power play in the Skrull council, essentially puts himself in charge as Skrull General, and draws the Skrull civilization on Earth into the war. That “entire Skrull civilization on Earth” is essentially all the Skrulls in the universe, secretly posing as humans.

Skrull General

Talos was the last Skrull general prior to Gravik

Emperor Drogge

Talos tells Fury that when he put out the call for refugees, all the Skrulls came to Earth except for the ones at “Emperor Drogge’s colony.”

There’s no Emperor Drogge in the comics, however, there is a Skrull character named Dro’ge Fenu Edu. First seen in “New Avengers” #40 (April, 2008) Dro’ge was the “Head Priests of the Sciences” of the Skrull Imperial Court. He studied the captured members of the Illuminati after their failed assault on the Skrull throneworld. He was tasked with taking the cell samples he’d gathered and experimenting to get an edge over the humans.

He realized he could manipulate the genes and apply them to Skrulls, creating a new class of Super-Skrull using the DNA of the members of the Fantastic Four.

Super Skrulls’ Fantastic Four Origin Replaced

We see G’iah looking at DNA samples she’s not supposed to be looking at, and she discovers the Skrulls are trying to use alien DNA to enhance themselves and turn the rebels into Super-Skrulls.

It was Dro’ge in the comics who created the Super-Skrulls.

In this episode, the DNA samples G’iah is examining come from different sources: Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy movies); Frost Beast (Thor The Dark World); Cull Obsidian (Thanos’ lieutenant Black Dwarf from Infinity War); and Extremis virus (Iron Man 3).

In the comics, Strength is from The Thing (new: Cull Obsidian); Stretch is from Mr. Fantastic (new: Groot); Fire is from The Human Torch (new: Extremis virus); and Invisibility is from The Invisible Woman (new: The Frost Beast).

FXN News

Chris Stern, a FOX News-esque reporter played by Christopher McDonald, is a member of the secret Skrull council.

“It’s the only reading of human history.”

Gravik and the Skrull council have an exchange after the attack, in which Gravik points out the real-world phenomenon of humans being horrid and uncaring toward each other and climate change.

Gravik mocks the council members for being so “human.”

“Playing the man’s game, using the man’s fork and knife.” -Gravik

“Better to behave as a human than as a dog.” -Councilman

“I quite like dogs. In fact, I prefer ’em. Dogs aren’t hypocrites. And they don’t lie. They don’t lock each other up in cages. They don’t pimp, poison, and they don’t go out of their way to degrade and destroy their own habitat.” -Gravik

“A naive reading of human history.” -Councilman

“It’s the only reading of human history.” -Gravik

Bring in the superheroes?

This is the rare instance in the MCU when the characters in the story actually address that possibility and provide a reason for why they shouldn’t call in the superheroes for help.

Gravik tells the Skrull council that he has a plan ready if the Avengers make a move.

Fury tells Rhodey that if they bring in the big guns, the Skrulls would pretend to be them while doing bad things.

Alexander Pierce

Former HYDRA/SHIELD boss Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) gets dragged by Fury in his meeting with Rhodey.

“Every ounce of power we wrestle from the vice grip of the mediocre Alexander Pierces who run this world was earned in blood,” Fury says while trying to get support from Rhodes for this war with the Skrulls.

Rogue Operative

Colonel Jim “War Machine” Rhodes fires Fury. Fury is now an official rogue operative and no longer a SHIELD leader.

Fury’s Skrull Wife

We see Fury go home to his Skrull wife Priscilla (played by Charlayne Woodard). And yes, he HAS to know she’s a Skrull.
