Roald Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is magical, mysterious fun in a world of pure imagination.
Broadway in Portland presents Roald Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY at Keller Auditorium through August 18th, 2019.
Thanks to Broadway in Portland for inviting us to a media preview. As always, all opinions are my own.
Remember the 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? It’s a classic, for sure. Kids of all ages love that movie, and if you didn’t read the book first, you likely read Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” followed by “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.” This musical is a modern take on the story of world-famous chocolatier Willy Wonka and the adventures that ensure after 5 children win Golden Tickets to tour his factory and a chance to win a lifetime supply of chocolate.
Mystical, magical, and fun while instilling some great moral messages, Roald Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is pure fun. Two acts of laughs and pure delight as you see the modern version of a classic unfold on stage. Noah Weisberg as Willy Wonka was superbly talented and commanded the stage in a way deserving of the standing ovation he received. Rueby Wood as Charlie Bucket was adorable and wildly talented. Watch him, because he’s got some pipes and acting skills at his ripe young age; I suspect he’ll be going places.
No spoilers, but there’s a moment in the show with Mike Teavee’s character and Willy Wonka that will have every parent cheering—the audience ROARED with laughter. You’ll know it when you see it.
