Education is the foundation of our youth. As a mom of four kids in public schools, local education initiatives from companies are something I especially appreciate. We all know that the school budget is never large enough, and it's often one of the first things cut when state dollars are short. This is when schools really need active, committed community partners.
Did you know that last year alone, Comcast invested $4.5 million in Oregon and Southwest Washington through grants and contributions, scholarships, and other community programs? Comcast is more than simply a telecom company—they are a strong community partner. Comcast's education initiatives like Internet Essentials, Cable in the Classroom, Beyond School Walls, and Digital Connectors, all help positively impact the Portland community by investing in the future of our youth. Programs like these provide the critical resources needed to educate Portland youth enabling students to participate in a technologically-rich education environment And Comcast’s 2,000 employees in the region are active participants in many of these efforts because they live, work, and play here too. They’re our neighbors. During the last “Comcast Cares Day,” 1,940 Comcast employees volunteered 7,500 hours for school projects, including cleaning and beautifying school campuses, and building new playground equipment. Comcast’s local employees also partner with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program as “Bigs” to the “Littles” in the Beaverton School District providing mentoring and education. This type of investment and community outreach are critical to our youth. Comcast is a great neighbor, committed to our local communities and investing in our future generations.
