Fall is here, which means warm days and cool nights. Pumpkin patches and corn mazes are the perfect fall activity. Portland’s original cornfield maze celebrates its 16th season at The Pumpkin Patch on beautiful Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon. The MAiZE attracts 30,000 eager explorers annually to the giant labyrinth of field corn, located just 15 minutes from downtown Portland. Portland’s premier agri-tainment attraction, The Maize and The Pumpkin Patch, have combined the local food movement with down home fun on the farm. This is the 3rd pumpkin patch and corn maze season we’ve visited The Maize at Sauvie Island.
The MAiZE itself offers two halves, one more difficult than the other. We wandered around the first half only this year for time’s sake. Because it was a gorgeous fall day, the line for the tractor ride to the pumpkin patch was quite long, and the kids really wanted to ride the tractor (versus just walking to the pumpkin patch) so we ditched the second half of the Maize for the tractor ride.
We headed to the Pumpkin Patch to get some pumpkins. After we rode the tractor and found three pumpkins (including a green one that we will use to make a Star Wars Yoda pumpkin) we headed back to the main area. There are local food vendors (pulled pork sandwiches, roasted corn on the cob, elephant ears, etc.) to quell the appetite you worked up wandering through the corn and pumpkin patch. The farm store offers lots of fresh local fruits and vegetables as well as other local agri-delights.
