As someone who loves to cook, I’m always looking for cookbooks that speak to me and the type of cooking I love to do. A Well-Seasoned Kitchen makes an amazing and personal gift for the cooks in your life and is perfect for the holiday hostess, home gourmet, mother-in-law, daughter, best friend, and more. Developed by a mother and daughter, A Well-Seasoned Kitchen is a recipe treasury for cooks who cherish creating delicious meals to nourish relationships with family and friends.
Mother and daughter team Sally Clayton and Lee Clayton Roper wrote and published this cookbook for today’s modern cook, such as the mom who juggles a busy life but finds joy in preparing meals for her family and friends. The hardcover cookbook includes 186 tested recipes, planning menus, helpful tips, and four-color photos by renowned food photographer Laurie Smith.
Some of my favorite recipes include Shelburne Farms French Toast, Cinnamon Raisin Bread Custard with Fresh Berries, and Clayton Lamb Curry.
The cookbook debuted just before Thanksgiving in 2010. Lee conceived the idea for this cookbook as her aging mother (who was a wonderful cook and hostess) was showing signs of memory loss. Gathering recipes, remembering their shared cooking experiences, and reliving family memories provided an opportunity to not only keep her mother mentally active but to also engage with her. The result is a timeless collection of recipes that are uncomplicated, delicious, and beautiful—and work well for entertaining as well as everyday use.
The book has over 150 pages of professional photos of the recipes and includes high-altitude instructions, make-ahead directions, and tips for beautiful presentation. Sadly, just as the mother-daughter duo were finishing the cookbook, Sally passed away. As the book was originally conceived as a project to mentally engage her mother, a portion of proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Colorado Chapter.
