Halloween is my favorite holiday, and it has nothing to do with candy! I love the costumes, the decor, the spooky themes! Halloween may be for the kids, but it can be about the adults, too! Halloween candy can be tricky to pair with wine, but if you stick with the basic wine pairing rule that a dessert wine should be sweeter than the dessert itself, Port wine offers “spooktacular” pairings with classic Halloween candy. In this article, we offer some tips on how to pair Halloween candy with Port wine. Here are a few of our favorites that feature Ports from Symington Family Estates to try out this year.

Graham’s 10 Year Tawny Port and Snickers

Graham’s 10 Year Tawny Port is known for its balanced acidity, in part, from having been aged in seasoned oak casks just 2 miles from the cool Atlantic Ocean. The moist ocean air imparts a fresh and vibrant house style for which Graham’s is known.  As a result, this Port’s is balanced acidity is perfect to cut through the milk chocolate of the Snickers candy bar. The caramel flavors and the saltiness of the nuts in the Snickers candy bring out the rich, complex flavors of this luscious Port wine. Graham’s 10 Year Tawny Port (SRP $36)

dows 10 year old tawny port nestle crunch - How to Pair Halloween Candy with Port

Dow’s 10 Year Tawny Port and Nestle Crunch

Dow’s 10 Year Tawny Port is known for its characteristically drier house style, a soft and rich palate, and mellow fruit flavors combined with vanilla and almond overtones from its prolonged cask aging. This makes the Dow Port wine a perfect pairing for the Nestle Crunch bar, a not-too-sweet, chocolate and crisped rice classic combination. The Port’s lingering finish will have you taking another bite of that classic Halloween candy bar. Dow’s 10 Year Tawny Port (STP $36)
