We had the luck of sitting down with the new Banks’ children: Pixie Davies (“Anabel Banks”) & Joel Dawson (“Georgie Banks”) in Mary Poppins Returns.
Our Interview with Pixie Davies and Joel Dawson to talk about their roles in Mary Poppins Returns was whimsical. They’re adorable children who clearly had fun in their roles.
I love interviewing children in movies because their answers are always so much less elaborate than those of the adults. They’re always less loaded, too, if you know what I mean. There is no intention behind any of the answers, just pure unadulterated honestly coming from the mouths of babes and innocent children.
Davies and Dawson loved working on the chases scene in the hand-drawn animation sequence. “That was so much fun. Because the music was being played, I actually felt like we were actually in a chase and it was really awesome,” Davies said. “It was really surprising because you don’t know all the details that are gonna be there, and then you watch it and it’s there.”
Dawson’s favorite part of the film was, “When I had to dive through the bushes and then got dragged along by the kite. That was a really fun scene.” His favorite song is “(Underneath the) Lovely London Sky.”
Davies, on the other hand, really like a very different part of the film. “I think it was ‘Trip a Little Light Fantastic’ because it was just incredible watching the dance. It just gets better every time.” That’s her favorite song, too. She also really liked the costumes from the film. “They were beautiful. They were. I really liked them ‘cause I like dressing kind of funky. And it was really awesome wearing some really cool clothes from another century.”
Dawson’s favorite song is “(Underneath the) Lovely London Sky” and Davies is ‘Trip a Little Light Fantastic,” just like her favorite scene in the film.
Davies favorite movie is Mary Poppins. Or at least it was before she found out she was in this sequel.
“I thought I was gonna burst!” Davies said.
Dawson was also pretty darn excited.
“Well, my agent already knew, so she came over and as she was there, then Rob Marshall called me, and he said, ‘We want you to have the part.’ And then I had it on speakerphone, and everyone was just so silent, and my eyes were watering. And my mum was squealing after the phone call.”
The advice these two have for other kids who want to get into acting: just do it, if you want to do it.
“If you really want to pursue it then just do, because honestly it’s the greatest feeling when you’re on set, and it just gives you that buzz,” Davies said.
“Business is business,” Dawson said.

Thanks to Walt Disney Studios for bringing me to Los Angeles on an all-expense paid trip. As always, all opinions are my own.
