Summer is here, and that means your home is heating up. Well, at least mine is. We’ve recently moved from a home with central air conditioning to a home without it. We have stunning floor-to-ceiling windows in most of our downstairs, which adds to the warmth on hot, sunny days.
While central air conditioning is popular and easy to use, it’s anything but inexpensive to install, especially if you’re retrofitting a home that doesn’t have forced-air heating.
Some of our rooms will accommodate a standard window AC unit, but we have three rooms that will not. The windows are combinations of skylights, crank windows that open outward or rooms with sliding glass doors. The best option we found is a portable air conditioner.
Thanks to NewAir with their NewAir Portable Air Conditioner (SKU: NWC046BS00) for sponsoring this post on cooling our home space. As always, all opinions are our own.
Portable air conditioners
I’ll admit, I wasn’t all that familiar with portable air conditioners until we were home shopping this last time. I had never even seen one in person until about 2 years ago.
Portable air conditioners are free-standing units that can be moved from room to room. They require a venting tube (or two, depending on the unit) that looks a bit like the vent from your clothes dryer, and they sit entirely inside your home. Most portable air conditioners/stand-up air conditioners also have a reservoir tank that needs to be emptied periodically, though some come with optional hookups for a drainage hose.
NewAir Portable Air Conditioner 500 sq. ft.
We went with the “NewAir Portable Air Conditioner, 14,000 BTUs (9,500 BTU, DOE), Cools 500 sq. ft., Easy Setup Window Venting Kit and Remote Control” (SKU: NWC046BS00). It rapidly cools and dehumidifies rooms 22’x22’, making it perfect for large rooms and open concept living spaces, which applies to both our main living area and our master bedroom suite.
Rapid cooling with the NewAir Portable Air Conditioner
We were pleasantly surprised—and a little shocked—at how quickly the NewAir Portable Air Conditioner cooled our space. With 14,000 BTUs of cooling power (9,500 BTUs with new DOE guidelines) and a fan with up to 250 CFMs of airflow, our house cooled down very quickly and went from humid 80s to 69 and tolerable in no time at all.
Unlike our previous central air, the cool air didn’t have to stop at every register along the path to the room you needed to cool down; the cool air was instantly in the space you needed it to be in.
Window Venting Kit Sets Up Easily in Minutes
The portable air conditioner comes with the venting kit for your window: a hose and kit that snaps together in minutes. Everything you need to “install” the venting kit is included and it’s very quick.
3-in-1 Portable AC Unit
While the air conditioner works fantastically, this NewAir Portable Air Conditioner is more than just an air conditioner. The 250-CFM fan is a powerhouse on its own. It also features an auto-evaporative system that dehumidifies and recycles excess moisture to reduce condensation.
NewAir Portable Air Conditioner Can Help With Pollen and Mold Allergies
The NewAir Portable Air Conditioner features easy-clean, slide-out dust filters and dehumidifying functions, which help to keep common allergens like pollen and mold to a minimum. This is a huge win for people like me who suffer from environmental allergies to pollen and mold.
Easy Control and Customization
The NewAir Portable Air Conditioner has an intuitive digital interface and includes a remote control to make it easier to select your favorite settings. It also includes a programmable timer that allows you to set cooling functions for up to 24 hours—an energy-saving feature that keeps you from accidentally running your AC non-stop.
Great for Buildings That Can’t Accommodate Window AC Units
While in our case we just have a few rooms that don’t accommodate window AC units, sometimes people are in a situation where they are in an apartment building or condo that doesn't allow window units or live in an older building that doesn’t accommodate them fit-wise because of odd shapes and sizes of windows. The NewAir Portable Air Conditioner is a perfect solution for that because of its portability and the venting window unit.
