Taking names and kicking ass is what you can expect from Joey King Veronica Ngo in THE PRINCESS, now streaming on Hulu. Director Le-Van Kiet’s love of martial arts is at the forefront of this fairy tale with a new spin.

Movie Review – THE PRINCESS on HULU
Princess as protagonist and feminist fighters is nothing new in movies. However, martial arts as the core fighting form for a princess is something of a spin for a fairy tale movie and it shows in director Le-Van Kiet’s latest film THE PRINCESS.

Martial Arts & Fight Scenes in THE PRINCESS
The martial arts scenes in THE PRINCESS were well-derived and smoothly choreographed. If you’re a martial arts fan, the movie is a fun watch for those martial arts sequences alone.

A Fun Watch but Lacking in Plot
As a whole, THE PRINCESS was a fun watch, but not one most will race to see more than once. It will likely resonate with high schoolers (teen girls), as I suspect that is the target audience. The plot? A little weak with a mash-up of a variety of fairy tales. The film opens with Joey King as the Princess laying unconscious in a white, ornate dress, her messy locks strewn about the pillow. Her bed is surrounded by flowers, but with a modern twist, she awakens on her own—not at the hand (or lips) of some handsome prince.
As she awakens, she proceeds to kick the bejeezus out of two dastardly brutish henchmen.
While the opening leads you to believe there may be some heavier, more substantive plot, it’s nary more than a modern fairy tale with a twist but an entertaining watch nonetheless.
