We love our superhero films here at Whisky + Sunshine. Marvel tends to be our fandom. Historically, DC films have generally left us feeling a little “meh.” That said, we went into Shazam! lukewarm on what to expect and walked out with our spirits lifted from a good laugh. Thanks to Allied Global Marketing and Warner Bros. for giving us an advanced screening of the film. As always, all opinions are our own.
Shazam! Movie Review
I adore Zachary Levi and will watch him in anything and everything all day long. My husband and I were HUGE “Chuck” fans back in the day and I think Levi is funny, adorable, and a charmingly funny guy. His roles always crack me up. I was really looking forward to seeing him as Shazam and he didn’t disappoint. I haven’t seen an actor play the role of a child in a grown man’s body so well since Tom Hanks in Big.
My kids LOVE “Andi Mack” on the Disney Channel, so when they saw Asher Angel was going to be Billy Bateson in this movie, they could not contain themselves (who knew Asher Angel was such a tween/teen heartthrob?!?). Angel’s acting is so much better than the glimpse we get on “Andi Mack” (sorry, Disney Channel), but that’s fantastic for him and all the tweens/teens out there because that means you know we’ll be seeing more of him in the near future.
The film had loads of great one-liners, is a great origin story, and we loved the way it sets up for a second film at the end (no spoilers here!). It even has a few touching moments to break up the laughter.
As with all good superhero films, be sure to stay for post-credit scene. Cookie credits/stingers are the best!
About Shazam! Movie
We all have a superhero inside of us— it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In 14-year-old Billy Batson’s case, all he needs to do is shout out one word to transform into the adult superhero Shazam. Still a kid at heart, Shazam revels in the new version of himself by doing what any other teen would do—have fun while testing out his newfound powers. But he’ll need to master them quickly before the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana can get his hands on Shazam’s magical abilities.
