Childhood Hunger is a Real Problem
Did you know that Oregon has one of the highest rates of children at risk for hunger in the United States? According to the Oregon Food Bank, 34% of kids in Oregon struggle with hunger. We’re not talking the “my-child-wants-an-extra-snack” hungry, we’re talking the “free-school-lunch-is-the-only-meal-my-child-will-get-to-eat-all-day” hungry. If you have school-aged children, your children most certainly go to school with some of these hungry kids—they are in every community and come from all walks of life. More than half (53%) of Oregon’s students (K–12) are eligible for free or reduced price school meals, and 221,000 low-income children in Oregon receive free or reduced-price school lunch. No Kid Hungry starts with breakfast. See the infographic below for more information how breakfast changes lives.
These statistics are staggering. You and I can help.
Taste of the Nation Portland
Join us at Taste of the Nation Portland on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the McMenamins Crystal Hotel & Ballroom as Portland’s culinary community gathers together to help raise money to end childhood hunger. This will be my first year attending this event, but it certainly won’t be my last. I look forward to seeing you there.
Enjoy an evening with Oregon’s best chefs, winemakers, brewers, and distillers as they come together to end childhood hunger. The event will be delicious, but the best part is that 100% of ticket sales support Share Our Strength’s efforts to end childhood hunger.
Each ticket purchased helps support Share Our Strength’s efforts in eliminating childhood hunger, as well as Oregon’s local beneficiaries Oregon Food Bank, Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon, St. Vincent DePaul Society, and Klamath/Lake Counties Food Bank.
In the wake of staggering reports that nearly half of all children in the U.S. will be on food stamps at the some point in their life, there is no time to waste. The time to act is now.
