It’s here! It’s here! I’m so relieved that I can FINALLY tell you how much I absolutely loved this movie. It’s EPIC. If it isn’t going to be THE box office hit of the summer, I don’t know what is.
I was fortunate enough to go to LA with a group of 24 other bloggers to attend a special screening and press events for Guardians of the Galaxy (checkout all the Guardians press coverage and interviews). I’m telling you I love this movie because I do, not because I feel like I should or someone said I should say that. I’m not even a comic book junkie, and this was so, so good. James Gunn is a genius. I can’t event begin to articulate to you just how brilliant he is. The writing, the directing, the details. The special effects, make-up, and sets are breathtaking. This movie has it all.
Guardians of the Galaxy Review
We start out on planet Earth in 1988. As a product of the 80s, so much about this movie brings me back to my childhood and makes me nostalgic. If you are also an 80s child, you’ll get it when you see the movie. Iconic 80s paraphernalia is scattered throughout the film. Walkman, troll dolls, pop songs, cassette tapes, The Giving Tree, Ranger Rick, Footloose/Kevin Bacon, and other jokes are just a sampling of the hilarity that is worked in. But they all fit. Oh, and who knew Chris Pratt could sing and dance?!
Spoiler: Here’s the non-comic book lover synopsis, in a nutshell. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is abducted from Earth to be returned to his half-alien dad. The people who fetch him, keep him instead of returning him to his father and raise him to be an outlaw. He lives his life collecting things and selling them. He comes across the orb and when he tries to sell it, gets turned down because it turns out someone much bigger and badder (Ronan, Lee Pace) wants it, and no one wants to eff with Ronan. Upon leaving the pawn shop, he runs into a pretty woman (Gamora, Zoe Saldana) who tries to steal the orb for her own purposes. In the meantime, Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) want to capture Quill to turn him in for the bounty that’s out on him. The 4 fight and get caught and sent to prison, where the guards dub them “A bunch of A-holes.”
In prison, they meet up with Drax (Dave Bautista) and escape with the intention of selling the orb, before realizing just how powerful it is. Once they realize it’s dangerous, they commit to defeating Ronan and handing the orb over to the governing authority for safe keeping.
In the meantime, the 5 form a strong bond and friendship, coming to the revelation that they are each other’s family.
Obviously this is the super brief version. There are some bad ass fight scenes in the movie and it’s great to watch the good guys kick butt (they always win, right?).
The movie offers some great quotes, touching moments, and down right funny sh*t. I laughed out loud some many times in the 2 screenings I saw.
