I was fortunate enough to go to LA with a group of 24 other bloggers to attend a special screening and press events for Guardians of the Galaxy (checkout all the Guardians press coverage and interviews). I'm telling you I love this movie because I do, not because I feel like I should or someone said I should say that. I'm not even a comic book junkie, and this was so, so good. James Gunn is a genius. I can't event begin to articulate to you just how brilliant he is. The writing, the directing, the details. The special effects, make-up, and sets are breathtaking. This movie has it all.
We start out on planet Earth in 1988. As a product of the 80s, so much about this movie brings me back to my childhood and makes me nostalgic. If you are also an 80s child, you'll get it when you see the movie. Iconic 80s paraphernalia is scattered throughout the film. Walkman, troll dolls, pop songs, cassette tapes, The Giving Tree, Ranger Rick, Footloose/Kevin Bacon, and other jokes are just a sampling of the hilarity that is worked in. But they all fit. Oh, and who knew Chris Pratt could sing and dance?!
Spoiler: Here's the non-comic book lover synopsis, in a nutshell. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is abducted from Earth to be returned to his half-alien dad. The people who fetch him, keep him instead of returning him to his father and raise him to be an outlaw. He lives his life collecting things and selling them. He comes across the orb and when he tries to sell it, gets turned down because it turns out someone much bigger and badder (Ronan, Lee Pace) wants it, and no one wants to eff with Ronan. Upon leaving the pawn shop, he runs into a pretty woman (Gamora, Zoe Saldana) who tries to steal the orb for her own purposes. In the meantime, Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) want to capture Quill to turn him in for the bounty that's out on him. The 4 fight and get caught and sent to prison, where the guards dub them “A bunch of A-holes.”
In prison, they meet up with Drax (Dave Bautista) and escape with the intention of selling the orb, before realizing just how powerful it is. Once they realize it's dangerous, they commit to defeating Ronan and handing the orb over to the governing authority for safe keeping.
In the meantime, the 5 form a strong bond and friendship, coming to the revelation that they are each other's family.
Obviously this is the super brief version. There are some bad ass fight scenes in the movie and it's great to watch the good guys kick butt (they always win, right?).
The movie offers some great quotes, touching moments, and down right funny sh*t. I laughed out loud some many times in the 2 screenings I saw.
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
“Sorry, I didn't know how this machine worked.” -Peter Quill
“Whatever nightmares the future holds are dream compared to what's behind me.” -Gamora
“Why would I put my finger on his throat?” -Drax
“Asleep for the danger, awake for the money, per usual.” -Rocket
“Spare me your foul gaze, woman.” -Drax
“I'm surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy.” -Gamora
“They crumpled my pants up into a ball. That's rude. They folded yours.” -Rocket
“Yo, Ranger Rick, what are you doing to my ship?” -Quill
“You just want to suck the joy out of everything.” -Rocket
“I'm a warrior and an assassin. I don't dance.” -Gamora
“I know who you are Peter Quill. I'm not some waif…to succumb to your pelvic sorcery.” -Gamora
“That is exactly why you have no friends. Five minutes after you meet them you try to kill them.” -Quill
“There's a little pee coming out of me right now.” -Quill
“It's not a purse, it's a napsack.” -Quill
“All the anger, all may rage was just to cover my loss.” -Drax
“Wanna talk about senseless? You were gonna blow up the guy who saved us!” -Quill
“We already established that blowing up the ship I'm on is not saving someone.” -Quill
“See, Groot's the only one of you who has a clue.” -Quill
“Life's Giving us a chance to do something, to give a sh*t for once.” -Quill
“I've spent most of my live surrounded by enemies. I'd be grateful to die among friends.” -Gamora
“I'm an a-hole, but I'm not 100% a dick.” -Quill
“I'm pretty sure the answer is ‘I am Groot'.” -Quill
“I can't believe I'm taking orders from a hamster.” -Saal
“Fingertip on throat. That means death. Metaphor. -Drax
“I'm distracting you, you big turd blossom.” -Quill
“You said it yourself, bitch, we're the Guardians of the Galaxy.” -Quill
“I may be as pretty as an angel, but I sure as hell ain't one.” -Yondu
“Something good, something bad, bit of both.” -Quill
And possibly the most momentous quote of the whole movie:
“We are Groot.” -Groot
