It’s not just any old Free Comic Book Day, either. This is the 20th anniversary of Free Comic Book Day.

What is Free Comic Book Day?
Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is only the biggest event in the comic book industry! It’s a single day when participating comic book and other specialty shops worldwide come together to give away FREE comics to anyone who comes to their shop!
The event was founded on the idea that there is a comic book out there for everyone; everyone can find a comic they will love!
The annual FCBD is usually the first Saturday in May and offers a selection of free titles to appeal to all ages and preferences. This year it’s Saturday, August 14, 2021 (pandemic life).

Who Participates in Free Comic Book Day?
More than 2,300 local comic shops offer comics from most of the major comic book publishers (such as Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite Entertainment, and Image Comics), as well as some independent publishers are participants.
There’s always a diverse selection of titles available, from superheroes to popular film and television shows, to beloved video games, and all-ages tales—something for everyone! Some of the popular series available in the past include Pokemon, Doctor Who, SpongeBob, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Riverdale, Overwatch, and Star Wars.
What Can You Expect on Free Comic Book Day?
In addition to offering free comics, many shops also host community events. Costume contests, creator signings, guest artists, photos with costumed characters, and other community activities are all things you shouldn’t be surprised to see hosted during an FCBD event. Every comic shop celebrates free comic book day in its own way, and fans love an opportunity to engage with their local comic shop and other comic culture enthusiasts.
