If you’re a fan of Cirque du Soleil shows, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities in Portland, won’t disappoint. This is the 9th Cirque do Soleil show I’ve seen, and I’m torn between whether or not this or Totem is my favorite—so you know it’s good when it’s a tie for my favorite show! Thanks to R/West for hosting us for a media preview of the show.
Whether you love Cirque du Soleil for the melange of unique acts, the live musical performances, the often uncanny stories behind the compilation of performances, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities will hold your attention after unlocking a door of wonders for the 90 minutes over two acts. In his larger-than-life curio cabinet, the Seeker discovers that there exists a hidden, invisible world where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams lie waiting. His collection of otherworldly characters suddenly steps into his makeshift mechanical, steampunk-inspired world. When the outlandish, benevolent characters turn his world upside down with a touch of poetry and humor in an attempt to ignite the Seeker’s imagination, his curios jump to life one by one before his—and our—very eyes.
Here are 4 reasons you won’t want to miss this show!
1. 13 unique and wild performances
From imaginary circus animals to an aerial bicyclist to an unbelievable yo-yoist, these acts will wow you and keep you on the edge of your seat.
2. Live music
One of the things I love about Cirque du Soleil shows is the live musical performances. Original musical scores performed live during the show enhance the performance. We buy the soundtrack each time we see a show.
3. Contortionists and aerialists
We’re always fascinated by contortionists and aerialists. My girls have taken aerials and are gymnasts (as was I). The level of badassness that these skill sets offer is amazing. In this show, the contortionist theme is four deep-sea creatures that embody electric eels inside the Seeker’s cabinet coming to life in a fast-paced and fluid contortion act. The aerial bicyclists jumps on her acrobatic bicycle suspended in midair and hangs on in a variety of positions. The other aerial act is a set of male aerial artists, sometimes solo, sometimes as the pair, soaring to impressive heights and crisscrossing above the stage while performing synchronized figures that require flawless timing.
4. Costumes and sets
The creativity that goes into each and every one of the Cirque du Soleil shows is on fleek. To be even a fly on the wall of the creative team would be phenomenal. Each show is so different and well done. KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities is no different and the steampunk-inspired mechanical feel is wild. You won’t want to miss it.
Tickets for Cirque du Soleil KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities
KURIOS will premiere under the iconic blue-and-yellow Big Top through 10/8/2017. Written and directed by Michel Laprise, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities is a tale in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible. In this realm set in the latter half of the nineteenth century, reality is quite relative indeed as our perception of it is utterly transformed.

I have never had the opportunity to see one of their shows, but they look amazing!! The colors, the acrobatics, the costumes! I know my family would be beyond excited to experience this. Thank you!
I have yet to see a show, but I love how it’s just normal people creating this amazing magical performance. It’s something I hope to get to do someday.
