Back-to-School Backpack Donation
Back-to-school can be a fun yet stressful time of year. It can be especially stressful for families who are expected to fill a large back-to-school supply list on a budget that already isn't large enough to feed a family, yet alone extras for school. I grew up in a family that was less fortunate than some, and while we were never quite poor enough to be eligible for anything more than free lunch, I can appreciate the need to help others. Giving a backpack of school supplies to someone who needs it, feels good and it a great way to give back right in your community. Today, my 2-grader daughters and I shopped to fill a backpack for a child in need.
Ebates gave us $25 to create a backpack for a child in need. In addition to being able to give back, we were able to do it pretty frugally, too! Two stops, Staples and Target, and $28.92 later we had a back pack ready to go!
Here's what we got:
Target : $17.93 total when I used my RedCard
- Backpack $8.99
- Lunch Box 7.99
- Elmers Rubber Cement $1.89
Staples: $10.99 shopping with the Less List
- Gluesticks $1.25
- Pencil Sharpener $0.68
- Pencil eraser caps $0.96
- (2) Crayons $0.50 each
- Glue $0.39
- 12-pack colored pencils $0.97
- (2) composition notebooks $0.50 each
- 12-count pencils $0.68
- Filler paper $1.76
- (2) pocket folders $0.15 each
- (2) sketchbooks $1.00 each
Frugal shopping and philanthropy all in one? Score. We went slightly over budget, but It was worth it to buy a fun lunch box instead of a plain one.
This is just one of the many ways we give back to our community and to charitable organizations throughout the year. What do you do with your kids for philanthropic activities?
