I grew up in the middle of nowhere Northern New York amidst farm country—mostly dairy farms. Rolling fields of cows and pastures are a thing of my childhood that don’t necessarily excite, and the smell of manure doesn’t phase me. As I’ve aged out of the farm life and gotten a little less country and a little more suburban in my old age, sometimes I forget just how beautiful and peaceful the quiet ruralness of a farm can be.
Sleep in a Reclaimed Grain Silo at Abbey Road Farm
Thanks to Abbey Road Farm for hosting me and Willamette Valley Visitors Association for coordinating my stay, As always, all opinions are my own.
While in the Willamette Valley on a food and Wine Tour recently, I had the opportunity to stay at the 82-acre working farm Abbey Farm Road in Yamhill County, a breathtaking property that is home to events, winemaking, and a fantastic bed and breakfast where guests get to hang their heads in reclaimed grain silos.

The Silo Suites are the Abbey Farms Bed and Breakfast rooms housed in three grain silos on the property, two of which were at one point working silos on the Abbey Farm property. Five suites are equipped with private baths that feature jetted tubs, foam topped beds, and radiant heated floors. The entry area features a sitting area with a wet bar, and your stay includes breakfast made by Chef Eric Bartle—a meal I promise you’ll wish you had every morning.

Our first morning included fresh homemade buttermilk biscuits, huckleberry pancakes, and polenta with scrambled eggs and the most amazing pancetta I’ve ever had. Our second morning featured fresh homemade buttermilk biscuits, French Toast, Huckleberry pancakes, and a frittata.

The property overlooks the mountains in Yamhill County and waking up to the snow-dusted mountains and farmland was nothing short of breathtaking. I couldn’t have imagined a better place to have been snowed in the morning the weather didn’t cooperate as planned for us, leaving us with an extra morning of Chef Eric’s cooking. The property, laden with chicken, sheep, donkeys, a llama, and farm decor is quint and perfect. If you want a rural experience just a short distance from the city life of Portland or the suburbs neighboring, Abbey Farm Road is the perfect romantic getaway or Girls’ Weekend location.

There’s a full hotel in Akron, Ohio that used to be grain silos for Quaker oats. It’s amazing to stay in a grain silo.
