Gameshow lovers can revel in Season 2 of ABC's newest game show “The Chase.” “The Chase” on ABC is a heart-racing quiz show featuring three competitors who must pit themselves (and their wits!) in a face-off against the Chaser.
In an hour of fast-paced battles of the brains, contestants are challenged to think faster than they thought possible to answer up to 166 questions across any topic you can imagine. The final task is the face-off with the Chaser, who is determined to use his ruthless quiz genius to stop them from winning cash prizes. The Chaser's include trivia geniuses-three former Jeopardy winners: “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time”’s James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings, and Brad Rutter.
I was recently able to interview Sara Haines, host of “The Chase,” and she shared some behind-the-scenes secrets and fun facts about the game show. If you haven't seen it yet, “The Chase” on ABC Season 2 airs Thursdays 9–10 p.m. ET on ABC. Episodes can also be viewed the next day on demand and on Hulu.
Fun Facts About “The Chase” on ABC with Sara Haines
I remember watching game shows with my grandmother after elementary school when she would pick me up and watch me for a few hours. Back in the day when Wheel of Fortune was on in the afternoons, that was her show of choice and we'd sit and try to solve the puzzles together. If she watched me on a day off from school, we added in The Price is Right, Let's Make A Deal, and Hollywood Squares, among others.
In the evenings, Jeopardy was a family favorite, and for years I watched with my dad and tried to answer as many questions as possible.
Game Nights are Family Nights
Sara said has always had an affinity for game shows. When the opportunity was presented to work on “The Chase,” she was excited for the thrill of the chase. She'd even love to see a kid version of the show someday.
The Perfect Job for Talking Too Fast
Sara said that her whole life she'd been told she spoke too quickly (I can so relate to this!). She joked that she has finally found the perfect opportunity to use that fast-talking skill set because being able to talk quickly is a skill set that's needing for reading those questions quickly during the game. She said if anything, she actually can read the questions more quickly than the teleprompter can show them.
Hosting “The View ” vs “The Chase”
If you're not familiar with Sara Haines, she's also currently a host on ABC's “The View.” Sara said since “The View” is unscripted, she spends much more time preparing for each recording of “The Chase” to ensure she's reading the questions correctly and pronouncing things accurately. “I don't want to mess anyone up when all that money is on the line.”
Fun on Set
Sara mentioned that the most fun part of being on set is interacting with the Chasers, as the three Jeopardy GOATS have three very different personalities. Sara said James Holzhauer is like a brother who loves to find ways to annoy you in a lighthearted way. Brad Rutter is just always chill and funny, and Ken Jennings is quite paternal to everyone.
Trivial Pursuit Advantage
What's the best way to gain the trivia knowledge to win at Trivial Pursuit? Have access to your own personal search engine!
Sara said that by hosting “The Chase,” she learns new trivia facts and is regularly asking the Chasers questions during breaks. “I use them as my own personal Google.” She said all her newfound knowledge helped her win her most recent family Trivial Pursuit night.
Filming During a Pandemic
As with all things pandemic related, filming a game show hasn't escaped being impacted. Being unable to have a studio audience definitely affects some of the energy of the show, but it's still fun and there's excitement in the race to the chase to see who is going to win. Sara said they take every precaution on set, too. There's no standing next to one another, the masks they were are triple thick, they don't get to stand near each other during breaks. It's very different than pre-pandemic filming.
Sara is a betting woman
While she doubts she could beat one of the Chasers at trivia, if she were to have an opportunity to go head-to-head with one of them, she'd bet it all. She'd want to win all the money if she did beat them!
