I know people are skeptical about anything or anyone replacing the original Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke are perfection in the 1964 classic. I remember watching it with my parents as a child—more specifically, I remember watching it with my dad and signing the musical numbers. It was a part of my childhood. While I was excited, I was also skeptical. But Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns certainly didn’t disappoint. This new adventure in the tales of Mary Poppins will excite and ignite your imaginations.
Here are 5 reasons to see the new Mary Poppins Returns.
Emily Blunt is practically perfect as Mary Poppins.
Certainly, no one can replace Julie Andrews, but Emily Blunt has taken the character and made it her own. She is brilliant as the practically perfect nanny and brings a new panache to the character.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is a lovely Leary.
Jack the Lamplighter (Leary) is a fun character who’s charm and smile will brighten even the worst moment of your day. One smile or wink from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s gregarious, infectious smile will have you leaving the theatre with a warmed heart. You won’t know what hit you. If this is your first time seeing Miranda perform, you’re in for a treat.
Broadway-scale dance numbers on the big screen.
Rob Marshall brings Broadway-scale dance numbers to the big screen in Mary Poppins Returns, like the 8-minute “Trip A Little Light Fantastic” that takes us through the streets of London, complete with bikes, fire, and ladders!
Dick Van Dyke in action.
I mean, if you love the legend that is Dick Van Dyke, you’ll get a little piece of the action in Mary Poppins Returns. I can’t wait to see this again JUST for Dick Van Dyke.
Beautiful costumes and magical stories.
From hand-painted costumes to hand-drawn animation sequences, you’ll love the nods to the original Mary Poppins in this movie. Mary Poppins Returns has so much wonder and merriment it will delight children ages 6 to 96.
You won’t believe all the great Easter Eggs and nods to other films, too (think Wizard of Oz moments).
MARY POPPINS RETURNS arrives in theatres everywhere on December 19th! Grab your tickets now!
Thanks to Walt Disney Studios for bringing me to Los Angeles on an all-expense paid trip. As always, all opinions are my own.
