LUCK Movie Review
LUCK follows Sam Greenfield (Eva Noblezada)—the unluckiest person in the world—who desperately wants to help her young friend. Sam meets a black cat named Bob (Simon Pegg) who leaves behind a lucky penny. Sam is excited to give the penny to her friend; but when it accidentally gets flushed down the toilet, she finds Bob again and follows him into the never-before-seen Land of Luck in hopes of getting a new penny.
Nothing goes as planned and she needs more than luck if she wants to help her friend, the inhabitants of the Land of Luck, and herself.
LUCK has deep emotional heart
“This is an original story, with a deeply emotional heart…told in a world that you’ve never seen before,” said director Peggy Holmes in a recent interview.
Holmes has plenty of experience under her belt working on movies that have lots of heart and excellent messaging. LUCK is no different in that aspect but it is the first animated feature with John Lasseter, former head of Pixar Animation, at the helm of Skydance Media’s animation division. Between Holmes and Lasseter, it’s no wonder much of the emotional heart in LUCK is a touch reminiscent of some of our favorite Pixar films like Inside Out and Toy Story; after all every good story is about helping friends.
LUCK has positive core messaging
“I hope to do something good with my life, and not let bad luck get in the way.” –Sam Greenfield
One of the great takeaways of the film is that bad luck doesn’t have to be a “thing.” Sure, bad luck might be real, but you can get through it. And that is something Sam realizes as the story goes on: she can get through anything if she puts her mind to it, bad luck or not.
LUCK has beautiful animation
Skydance is no stranger to filmmaking, but LUCK is its first feature animated film and the vibrant, lively animation style used in LUCK is one that stands out. The characters are well crafted and unique and we are living for Babe the Dragon, with Jane Fonda’s voice and creative vision that was part of the process. Boa tails?? Yes, please.
LUCK has stellar voice talent
With the voice talents of actors such as Jane Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg, Eva Noblezada, Simon Pegg, Flula Borg, Colin O’Donoghue, John Ratzenberger, and Adelynn Spoon in the mix, you can expect the delivery of humor and heart to be spot on.
