*Spoiler Alert* If you haven’t watched The Book of Boba Fett Episode 5, this is your spoiler warning.
The Book of Boba Fett Episode 5 Easter Eggs
The Mandalorian
The episode opens with The Mandalorian looking for Kaba Baiz, inside the Klatooinian’s slaughterhouse.
“I can bring you in warm, or I can bring you in cold.”
“I can bring you in warm, or I can bring you in cold,” is a quote from “The Mandalorian” Season 1, Episode 1, so it’s a nice callback to when we first met Din Djarin.
Darksaber and Beskar Spear
The Mandalorian is still carrying the Beskar spear and Darksaber, which he got after defeating Moff Gideon in “The Mandalorian” Season 2, Episode 8.
The Beskar spear, a staff wielded by Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth on Corvus during the New Republic Era, was made of pure Beskar, a metal alloy tied with Mandalorian culture and first appeared in “The Mandalorian” Season 2, Episode 5. It’s a danger to all Mandalorians because it can pierce Beskar and blocks lightsabers.
The Darksaber, was a unique, ancient black-bladed lightsaber created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order. The first appearance of the Darksaber was in “The Clone Wars” Season 2, Episode 12.
Ishi Tib
Din’s alien employer in the Substrata is an Ishi Tib, a species of sentient, humanoid amphibians from the planet Tibrin, first seen in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
Kolzoc Alley and the Substrata
The Mandalorian follows signs on the wall to find the Substrata in Kolzoc Alley, one of which is the Mandalorian symbol.
Mandalorian Armorer
The Mandalorian Armorer was a Mandalorian tasked with forging armor and gear out of Beskar metal. One armorer, known simply as “the Armorer,” was part of the Tribe on Nevarro after the Great Purge of Mandalore. She kept the tradition of the Mandalorian people alive by forging Beskar and reminding the Tribe to never remove their helmets in the presence of another stating “This Is The Way.” During the skirmish on Nevarro, after reminding him of Mandalorian Creed, she tasked Din Djarin with bringing Grogu to the Jedi Order. The Armorer’s first appearance was in “The Mandalorian” Season 1 Episode 1.
Paz Vizsla
Paz Vizsla, a human Heavy Infantry Mandalorian from the planet Mandalore, was a member of the Tribe during the reign of the New Republic, living on the planet Nevarro. Vizsla’s first appearance was in “The Mandalorian” Season 1, Episode 3. Jon Favreau plays Paz Vizsla.
Bo-Katan Kryze
Following the Seige of Mandalore at the end of “The Clone Wars,” Bo-Katan Kryze was appointed regent of Mandalore but refused to obey Imperial rule and lost her position to Gar Saxon who was made as viceroy.
In “Star Wars Rebels,” Sabine Wren gifted the Darksaber to Bo-Katan after she won the right to wield it by defeating Imperial Viceroy Gar Saxon in a duel.
The Armorer believes it is Bo-Katan’s wielding the Darksaber without earning it that has cursed the Mandalore.
House Vizsla
The Great Purge
“These were cast in an Imperial smelter. These are the spoils of the Great Purge, the reason why we live hidden like sand rats.” ―Paz Vizsla (on Imperial-forged Beskar) “The Mandalorian” Season 1, Episode 3
The Mandalore survived the Great Purge because their sect, The Death Watch, was stationed on the moon Concordia. A flashback shows The Night of a Thousand Tears when the Great Purge resulted in almost complete genocide of the Mandalore.
KX-Series Imperial Security Droids, Probe Droids, and Tie Bombers are seen in this same flashback scene.
This is the Way
While learning to wield the Darksaber, Paz Vizsla challenges Din to a duel. Upon winning, the Armorer asks Paz and Din if either has ever taken off their helmet in the presence of another. Paz has not and she tells him “This is the Way.” Din admits he has. The Armorer tells him he is no longer a Mandalorian and can “only be redeemed in the Living Waters beneath the mines of Mandalore.” However, the mines are destroyed. He leaves with the Darksaber.
Peli Motto
Mando goes to Tatooine and we see Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto again this week. Her BD droid is attacked by a Womp Rat who attacks her. Fortunately, The Mandolorian saves her. Jedi Cal Kestis’ BD-1 droid is the same droid unit series in the Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order video game.
New Ship, Who ‘Dis?
“Do you have any idea what this is? This is an N-1 starfighter, handmade for the Royal Guard and commissioned personally by the Queen of Naboo.” ―Peli Motto
Peli Motto tells Mando she has a replacement ship for the Razor Crest—an N-1 Starfighter. The N-1 Starfighter, aka the Naboo Starfighter, is the ship of the Royal Guard of Naboo, and its first appearance is in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.
Trash Compactor Booster?
Peli Motto and Mando worked to repair the N-1 Starfighter in her workshop. Peli’s DUM-series Pit Droids, R5, and the Jawas help out. Peli tells Din she buys parts from the Jawas. Din requests the Jawas get him a cryogenic density combustion booster.
The piece of junk that Han Solo used to keep the walls from closing in on them in the trash compactor in Star Wars: A New Hope is a cryogenic density combustion booster. How’s that for a random, obscure Easter egg?
Fast as a Fathier
Peli tells Din that the starfighter will be as “fast as a fathier,” the horse-like animals from the planet Cantonica seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Beggar’s Canyon
Mando takes the N-1 Starfighter for it a run through Beggar’s Canyon and up into the space above Tatooine. Beggar’s Canyon is a narrow dry river bed that cuts through Ben’s Mesa, on the desert planet of Tatooine.
Beggar’s Canyon was first seen on screen during the pod race in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. In Star Wars: A New Hope, Luke Skywalker boasts that flying a speeder bike translates to a starfighter.
Pilots Luke Skywalker and Biggs Darklighter flew T-16 Skyhoppers through the canyon, later recalled Beggar’s Canyon while fighting in the Battle of Yavin; during the Rebel Alliance’s assault on the Death Star, the two pilots entered into a narrow trench leading towards the planet-destroying space station’s reactor shaft, and the trench reminded them of the canyon.
Mando is tailed by 2 X-Wings, piloted by Captain Carson Teva and Lt. Reed. Mando escapes without incident and heads back to Peli.
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee reprises his role as Captain Carson Teva, and Max Lloyd-Jones, who plays Lt. Reed, is the body double for Mark Hamill in “The Mandalorian” Season 2, Episode 8.
Grogu
The Mandalorian asks the Armorer to forge something for Grogu to help keep him safe. The Armorer ties a scarf around the newly minted armor in the shape of Grogu’s head.
The Mandalorian visits Grogu.
