The Book of Boba Fett Episode 3 Easter Eggs
The Title
“The Streets of Mos Espa” is a nod to at least two street crime dramas, including the 1939 movie Streets of New York and the 1970s TV series “The Streets of San Francisco,” which gave Michael Douglas his break.
B’omarr monk
The episode begins with a B’omarr monk outside Jabba’s Palace.
The B’omarr monks are a religious order who believe that true spiritual enlightenment can only come through detachment from physical sensation. They transplant their brains into jars of nutrients carried around by droids in order to achieve this, thus the robot spider outside of the Palace.

What Happened When Jabba Died
8D8 gives Boba Fett and Fennec Shand a brief history lesson on what happened when “name that should not be spoken” (Jabba the Hutt) died. This is a nod to Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter franchise.
8D8 continues with the details. The city was split into 3 sections under Bib Fortuna and 3 different families each gained control of a section. The Aqualish, The Klatooinians, and The Trandoshans.
- The Aqualish is the worker’s district. We first see the Aqualish in A New Hope, when Obi-Wan Kenobi cut off Pondo Baba’s arm in the Cantina bar. Pando Baba was originally called a “Walrus Man” in the Kenner action figure range.
- We were first introduced to the reptilian humanoid species the Klatooinians in the Return of the Jedi. The Klatooinians are in control of the starport and upper sprawl. Kithba died during Han Solo’s rescue from Jabba’s Palace. Luke Skywalker killed Barada during that same rescue mission.
- The Trandoshans are the reptilian species that gained control of the city center. The bounty hunter Bossk is a member of this group.
8D8 shares that Bib Fortuna was paying off the Mayor.
A Return of the Jedi Joke Returns
The Klatooinians name came from the classic 1951 sci-fi movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, as did the Nikto sand flyers (seen as flashbacks in all 3 episodes of “The Book of Boba Fett” as the Kintan Striders, the Nitko biker gang).
In the movie Return of the Jedi, names are lifted from The Day the Earth Stood Still alien visitor Klaatu’s line, “Gort, Klaatu barada nikto.” BD8 shares the details about the Klatooians, Boba Fett flashes back to Nikto, and one of Jabba’s Klatooinian henchmen is named Barada.
Lortha Peel Request
Lortha Peel asks Boba Fett to eliminate a gang that was been plaguing the streets of Mos Espa. The gang has been harassing Lortha Peel and stealing his water. Peel is played by Stephen Root, a prolific actor who may be best known for his role as Milton in Office Space (1999), has been in dozens of other films and TV series including “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Succession,” “Pushing Daisies,” “The Big Bang Theory,” Queenpins, “Barry,” and many more

Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, and the Gammorrean guards find the gang and confront them, but not before seeing two Jawas. One of the gang members, Drash, admits to stealing water. Another member, Skad, tells Fett it is because Peel grossly overcharged them.
Back outside the Palace, we see a Nuna caught and then eaten by a Worrt. A Nuna, also known as a swamp turkey, is sometimes raised as livestock on the planet Batuu. The legs are roasted and both Nuna Turkey Jerky and roast Nuna are popular things to make with their meat.
Worrts, first seen in Return of the Jedi at Jabba’s Palace, hail from Tatooine. Han Solo and Lando Calrissian encountered a pet worrt named Korrg kept by pilot Taka Jamoreesa as found in the 2018 novel Last Shot by Daniel José Older. There is also a worrt held in a tank at Oga’s Cantina in Batuu’s Black Spire, where it lays fresh eggs daily for use as ingredients in drinks such as Jabba Juice and Carbon Freeze.

More Bacta Tank and Flashbacks
Boba Fett spends more healing time in the Bacta Tank. This time, Boba Fett’s flashback is about his time on Kamino as he watches his father Jango Fett leave on the Slave 1. He then flashes to time with the Tusken Raiders, where he is in the desert riding a Bantha to Mos Eisley. Boba Fett asks two Jawas where to find the Pyke Syndicate.

We see the Storm Trooper helmets on stakes as Boba Fett rides through town, just as we did in “The Mandalorian.”
A careful eye will spot “The Mandalorian’s” Peli Motto (played by Amy Sedaris) and her DUM-series pit droids in the background of this scene. These droids first appeared in The Phantom Menace.
There are several other callbacks to The Mandalorian in this scene, including a set dressing.

The leader of The Pyke Syndicate tells Boba Fett he spoke with his superiors on Oba Diah, the home planet of the Pykes, and they refuse to pay additional protection money to the Tuskens because they already pay protection money to the Kintan Striders while doing business in the Outer Rim Territories. The Kintan Striders are a Nikto gang active in the Dune Sea and Tatooine. The gang shares its name with the Nikto homeworld Kintan and with the Kintans species seen on the holographic Dejarik game pieces as played on the Millennium Falcon in A New Hope.
Oba Diah is first seen in season six of “The Clone Wars.”

Black Krrsantan Attacks
Black Krrsanstan attacks Boba Fett while he is in the tank and tries to kill him. The gang kids Boba Fett brought back to the palace try to help but Krrsanstan is strong. Fennec traps him in the Rancor Pit. They use the bacta tank to heal the Gammorean wounded in the fight.
The Hutt Twins
An R5-series astromech droid serves food at a banquet. 8D8 interrupts the banquet with news that “the Twins” have arrived with a gift. The droid is much like the R5-D4 unit whose bad motivator led Luke Skywalker and his Uncle Owen to purchase R2-D2 from the Jawas in A New Hope.
The gift The Hutt Twins arrive with is a bound Rancor carried on a repulsorlift sled to apologize for sending Black Krrsanatan to try to kill him. The Rancor is accompanied by a human Rancor keeper, played by Danny Trejo. They tell Boba Fett the Mayor lied to them both and the territory has been promised to yet third Syndicate. The Twins leave Krrsantan behind, also, and Boba releases Krrsantan.
Emotional Rancors
We learn that this male Rancor calf is depressed. Rancors are emotionally complex creatures. A rancor will form strong bonds with its owners and are generally lovers, not fighters. In “The Bad Batch,” Omega bonds with a female Rancor named Muchi the Clone Force 99 team recovers for Jabba the Hutt.
Rancors are native to Dathomir, Darth Maul’s home. There is also a nod to the Witches of Dathomir and their use of Rancors, and Fett wants to also learn to ride the Rancor. Boba Fett is determined to be the first human this Rancor bonds with as he wants to ride it and he knows it is depressed. They fed the rancor a whole ronto. Vistors to Batuu can get a Ronto Wrap at the Ronto Roasters. The first appearance of the ronto was in the 1997 Special Edition of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and it was originally called a bronto after its inspiration, but they later dropped the b.
Though Jabba the Hutt used the rancor’s viciousness to his benefit, Boba may use that side as a tool to keep people in line, but that clearly isn’t how he plans to utilize his rancor as a whole.

I decided I want to quit being a bookseller and become a Rancor trainer.
During the speeder chase, the majordomo drives through a painting of Jabba in his throne room being carried in the street. The painting was originally by Ralph McQuarrie – and even includes Boba Fett himself to the right of the painting. (Can be seen at the 31:07 mark).
I love this. Thank you!
