THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES 2 Movie Review
We had the opportunity to screen THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES 2 this week and it was everything we had hoped for. We loved the first one and we were very excited about this sequel. THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES 2 is an action-packed Christmas adventure for the whole family that’s full of heart, humor, and holiday spirit.
Did you know that it’s been 34 years since Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn starred together in a movie? 1987’s Overboard was the last time they couple paired up in a film together, save a quick cameo in the first The Christmas Chronicles in 2018.

In the 2 years since Kate and Teddy Pierce saved Christmas, a lot has changed. Kate, now a cynical teenager, is reluctantly spending Christmas in Cancun with her mom’s new boyfriend (Bob) and his son Jack. Kate decides to run away after having enough of this new version of her family. Santa Claus pulls in Kate and Jack to help save Christmas again when magical troublemaker Belsnickel threatens to destroy the North Pole and end Christmas for good.

Throughout the film, there are several touching moments with the Clauses, the elves, and reindeer (no spoilers here), as well as a full-choir song-and-dance number in the airport featuring airline attendant Darlene Love trying to placate the stranded holiday travelers, joined by Santa himself. This original number by Steven Van Zant, “The Spirit of Christmas,” certainly creates another touching moment to the collection, along with the Pierce family singing “O Tannenbaum.”

While we loved the first film, and this second one definitely expands on the story and adds much holiday tradition and lore. The storyline additions that involve the Turkish origins of Santa Claus, the Icelandic legend of the Yule Cat (Jólakötturinn, which Nick calls “Jola” for short), and even the Star of Bethlehem (I instantly recognized the shape of the Moravian Star; we were gifted one at our wedding and it hangs in our home) are brilliantly woven in. You can’t not love a film that has had so much fantastic research done for it!
