Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Easter Eggs, Cameos, and Callbacks
Knowhere’s Bar
The movie opens on Knowhere as all of the Guardians of the Galaxy adjust to life after the Holiday Special. If you look clsosely at the bar’s sign, you’ll notice that it has got the Guardians of the Galaxy title written on it.
Superman?
Adam Warlock’s entry into the MCU had a familiar feel to it. Flying through the sky, Warlock looks a bit like Superman. Writer and director James Gunn’s next project at DC is Superman: Legacy, so this could be a nod. Warlock also reminds us a lot of Homelander from The Boyz.
Space Poker Cameos
We see Kraglin (Sean Gunn) and Cosmo (Maria Bakalova) playing a space version of poker against a number of characters from previous Guardians of the Galaxy movies, including:
- Howard the Duck (Seth Green)
- Bzermikitokolok the non-human rock ‘n’ roll frontman from the Guardians Holiday Special (Rhett Miller)
- Gridlemop the prisoner from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (Lloyd Kaufman); Gunn’s mentor and Troma Entertainment co-founder
- The Broker on Xandar Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (Christopher Fairbank), which also reveals that not every citizen of Xander died during Thanos’ attack when he stole the Power Stone.
Nathan Fillion
Nathan Fillion stars as Master Karja. Fillion is one of James Gunn’s go-to actors.
The Suicide Squad
James Gunn pulled in some of The Suicide Squad for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Jennifer Holland and Gunn’s wife (The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker) is Administrator Kwol and Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad) is Ura, both supporting roles at Orgocorp HQ. Pete Davison (The Suicide Squad) is a voice actor for the Blob CG character.
Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign
Elizabeth Debicki’s Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign Ayesha is back, though not as high and powerful as when we met her in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Ant-Man Family Ties
Judy Greer (Ant-Man; The Specials, which Gunn wrote) is the voice of War Pig CG character.
Mockingbird or Otter?
Linda Cardellini, who plays Hawkeye’s wife in the MCU, is the voice of Lylla the Otter CG character.
More of Batch 89
Mikaela Hoover is the voice of Floor the Rabbit CG character. Hoover was also Nova Prime’s Assistant in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1
Asim Chaudhry (Sandman) is the voice of Teefs CG character.
Stakar Ogord
Sylvester Stallone is back as Yondu’s former Ravager mentor Stakar Ogord.
Miss Minutes
Tara Strong (Loki‘s Miss Minutes) replaced Miley Cyrus as the voice of the Ravager Mainframe in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The floating mechanical artificial intelligence head first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Martinex T’Naga
Crystal-headed Ravager and Stakar’s first officer Martinex T’Naga, played by Michael Rosenbaum has returned in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Krugarr
Stakar’s clan, as first seen in Guardians of the Galaxy in Vol. 2, is seen working with his former leader in Vol. 3. The sorcerer opened the portals his fellow Ravagers used to board the Guardians’ ship near the Orgoscope.
Stanley Kubrick Nod
As the team heads to the Orgoscope to try and find Rocket’s kill-switch code, they wear some colorful suits in space that look like a nod to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Celestial’s Skull
Stephen Blackheart plays the Knowhere dispatcher named Steemie who was still on the job inside the dead Celestial’s Skull in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (as he was in Vol. 1 and in the Guardians Holiday Special.
Michael Rooker Cameo
Right before Kraglin has right before realizes how to wield Yondu’s Yaka Arrow.
Gregg Henry
Gregg Henry, who worked with James Gunn in Slither as well as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is Peter Quill’s grandfather, Grandpa Quill
Kevin Bacon
During the end credits with Peter Quill”s grandfather, Grandpa Quill is reading a newspaper with the headline “Alien Abduction: Kevin Bacon Tells All!”, which is a nod to Peter’s favorite actor getting kidnapped by Drax and Mantis during the Guardians Holiday Special.
Phlya
In the first end-credit scene, we get a glimpse of what may become of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the future as Rocket takes over as Captain of the team.
The short time jump shows us Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, and one of the young alien girls the team rescues during the film, whose name is Phyla. This is almost certainly Phyla-Vell or a nod to Phyla-Vell.
Introduced in 2004, Phyla-Vell has comic books ties to both the Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel and uses the alias, Quasar. In the comics, Phyla-Vell is actually the daughter of the first Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell.
